Weightlifting is a strangely compelling sport to watch. There’s nothing like switching on Eurosport to watch loads of little lads from Turkmenistan lift something that weighs the same as a Toyota Avensis. Who needs Sky Sports?
One of the many pleasures of the sport is the sense that we are never that far away from a horrible injury as some fella’s body part pops as he tries to fight gravity with just the might of his muscles.
But we never thought we’d see this. Footage from a deadlift competition in the US shows a guy known on YouTube as MikeBurrito, we think the announcer calls him Mike Guerrero though, try to lift 600 pounds and it takes so much out of him, he passes out.
In fairness to Mike, he successfully lifts 525 pounds, and then 570 pounds, before coming a cropper on the 600 pounder.

The good news is Mike is none the worse for his collapse. That’s a weight off our mind. Sorry.
