In the aftermath of the ultra-convenient 1-1 draw between Russia and Azerbaijan on Tuesday night, a lot of people made the connection between Russia’s obvious time-wasting tactics (and Azerbaijan’s lack of attempts to win the ball back) in stoppage time and the famous soccer clip from the Simpsons.
Thankfully, the folks at Golazo Clips have gone to the trouble of mashing the Simpsons clip together with the passage of Russian possession football and although we would have preferred if the Simpsons commentary was audible throughout the clip, it’s still pretty funny.
We shouldn’t go too hard on the Russians, however, as we vaguely remember two teams adopting similar tactics when their qualification to the latter stages was assured in a World Cup about 23 years ago…
