Wigan looked dead and buried for a while at the Emirates this evening, but thanks to this sweet free-kick from Shaun Maloney, the prospect of yet another great escape is still alive.
Wigan have pulled off a few miraculous relegation escapes in recent years but they’ll need to come up with their best yet if they are to remain in the Premier League this season as they need to win their last two games and rely on results elsewhere to beat the drop.
Having won the FA Cup Final against the odds on Saturday, however, Wigan have a habit of defying the odds and they could be about to do so again this evening after Shaun Maloney scored just before the break to cancel out Lukas Podolski’s headed opener for the hosts.
As he did against QPR earlier in the season, Maloney hit the net with a brilliant free-kick of a style more associated with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Andrea Pirlo and even though Szczesny got a hand to it, he couldn’t quite keep it out.
It was truly a fantastic strike and it sets up what could be a fascinating second half at the Emirates.
Game on.
