It wasn’t a great night overall for Real Madrid last night. A 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao meant that they failed to capitalise on Barcelona’s home defeat to Valencia on Saturday night and go above their fabled rivals in the table, while a victory for city rivals Atletico over Real Sociedad led to Diego Simeone’s men opening up a three-point lead at the top of the La Liga table.

Worse still, Real’s star man and current holder of the Ballon d’Or Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for the seventh time in his career as a result of a rather bizarre incident with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

Ronaldo tangled with Bilbao’s Gurpegi on the edge of the Bilbao area and when Gurpegi reacted badly to something Ronaldo did by pushing him in the chest, the former Man United man then appeared to grab his hair and scrape his forehead, actions which caused Gurpegi to drop to the ground as if he had been caught by a sniper in the audience.

A number of players subsequently got involved – most notably Iturraspe of Bilbao – and after a couple of minutes of petty squabbling, Ronaldo was eventually given his marching orders.

Harsh? Perhaps, but don’t try and take Cristiano Ronaldo on in a cat fight whatever you do. Mee-ow.
