If anyone had any doubts that Liverpool are on a par with Alf Stewart in terms of their popularity in Australia, then this belting version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ at the MCG should put them to bed.

The Reds are taking on Melbourne Victory at the iconic Melbourne venue today and with thousands of ex-pats from England and Ireland living in the city, as well as a number of native Liverpool followers, approximately 95,000 turned up to watch Brendan Rodgers’ men in action against the A-League outfit.

It can often be hard to summon up a bit of atmosphere for these pre-season games but that wasn’t an issue today as seemingly the entire stadium belted out the famous Liverpool anthem with gusto before the game, a version that would be up there with anything heard in Anfield or Celtic Park over the years.

As for the game itself, Liverpool are ahead 1-0 at the time of writing thanks to a very well-manufactured goal from skipper Steven Gerrard, who finished tidily after originally pulling off an impressive dummy in the build-up.
