Glasgow Celtic beat Barcelona 2-1 tonight in one of the most epic results in the club’s history.
A few weeks ago many thought Celtic had their chance to overcome one the best sides in the world when they lost to a last minute goal 2-1 to Barcelona in the Camp Nou, but tonight Celtic put on an impressive performance to beat the Catalan giants 2-1 at Celtic Park.
Celtic showed ferocious intensity taking the game to Barca from the off and defending superbly when they had to.
Celtic went ahead in the first half from an emphatic Victor Wanyama header:
Barcelona attacked Celtic throughout the game but try as Messi et al may – they couldn’t breakdown Neil Lennon’s well set up side, who constricted their room to attack the home side and they themselves attacked on the counter.
In the 82nd minute 18 year-old striker Tony Watt scored a fairytale goal on the counter:
Moments afterwards Celtic could have had another goal, when Mascherano could have been sent off for a foul on Watt when the young forward was through again.
Barca’s main man Messi grabbed a consolation goal in the first minute of injury time, but it was Celtic’s night as they secured one of the most memorable upsets in Champion’s League history.
The win puts Celtic second in their group behind Barca and this gives the Glasgow side a great chance to progress to the knockout stages of Europe’s premiere club competition in the year of their 125th anniversary as a club.
