As a player, there’s no doubting Sergio Ramos has great ability. As a character, at least on the pitch, he can be a bit of an eejit. All of that was summed up in the space of about ten seconds last night.
Ramos has been a stalwart of the Real Madrid and Spanish rearguards for years now and is arguably one of the best defenders around, but he also has a habit of putting others’ noses out of joint and getting himself into spots of bother on the pitch, as 18 career red cards to date will testify.
Ramos summed up pretty much what he is all about in a brief cameo at the end of Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao last night, first producing an amazing piece of skill on the right touchline then falling rather theatrically under the challenge of Bilbao’s Ander Herrera, after which he kicked the ball directly at Herrera and then gestured for him to be given a yellow card.
Ramos might not always be likeable but you certainly couldn’t call him boring.
