Video: The most ridiculous own goal from 40 yards out you’ll see today

And we're fairly confident when we say that, unless any of you were watching JOE's Sunday league team today

And we’re fairly confident when we say that, unless any of you were watching JOE’s Sunday league team today

Most fans of the Premier League will at least of heard of a small club called Manchester United, and might even remember all that feudin’ and a-fussin’ that went on when they were bought over by the Glazers, which lead to the foundation of F.C. United of Manchester.

Since then, the latter club has been fighting their way up from the boxcars, and in their most recent match in the Evostik Northern Premier League, Premier Division (one of our favourite leagues it has to be said) against Frickley Athletic, the crowd in attendance bore witness to one of the most ridiculous own goals you’re likely to see.

Under no real pressure after Manchester pump the ball out to clear their lines from a corner (although Rhodri ‘My brother is Ryan’ Giggs is giving him a bit of a hard time), Frickley’s Steven Gardener manages to try and knock the ball back to his ‘keeper, but gets a little too much mustard on the pass and ends up lobbing him from 40 yards out.

The video has the entire highlights of FCUM’s 3-0 win, but jump ahead to 3:21 to see the goal happen. Helpfully, we’ve chosen to start the video there for you if this whole technology thing hasn’t betrayed us. We’re awful good to you.
