Although this goal by Thiago Silva was correctly disallowed, it’s still kind of a pity that the officials played by the rules because such an amazing piece of skill deserved a better reward.
Brazilian centre half Thiago Silva has already earned a deserved reputation as one of the best defenders in European and world football thanks to his exploits with AC Milan, PSG and the Brazilian national team, but last night he demonstrated what he is capable of at the other end of the field with a sensational goal in a 3-0 victory over Nice that was unfortunately ruled out by the officials.
After racing onto a through ball and knocking it past the onrushing ‘keeper, Silva managed to bend a shot from right on the end-line into the far corner, a feat that seemed impossible given the lack of an angle Silva had to work with and the sheer pace that he was travelling at.
Unfortunately, it was correctly ruled that the ball had (just) crossed the end-line before Silva made contact, which, although it meant that the goal was ruled out, also made it even more impressive in a way because it is even more difficult to pull off from a starting point behind the goal.
It didn’t matter to PSG in the end because they coasted to a comfortable victory in any case, but Silva’s goal really would have been the icing on the cake.
The clip above is something you still wouldn’t mind showing the grandkids one day all the same.
