‘Next Goal Wins’ is a new documentary about the American Samoa international football team, widely regarded as the worst international team in the world.
On April 11 2001, in a qualifying match for the 2002 World Cup, American Samoa came to the attention of the world when they suffered a fairly comprehensive 31-0 defeat to Australia. Thirty. One. Nil.
The first goal didn’t come untill the 10th minute and then of course, the Noah-esque floodgates opened. The documentary follows the fortunes of new coach, Thomas Rongen, who has been given the unenviable task of making them slightly harder to beat. They must not have buses in American Samoa or maybe they do and it’s just illegal to park them.
