Udinese midfielder Andrea Lazzari added his name to a distinguished list of players who have scored from the halfway line and beyond with a cracking effort in a pre-season friendly last night.

David Beckham, Xabi Alonso and Nayim are just some of the players who have managed to beat a ‘keeper with audacious attempts from inside their own half and Lazzari did likewise in a friendly against Siroki Brijeg of Bosnia and Herzegovina last night.

It must be said that Lazzari was helped in no small way by the opposition ‘keeper getting caught dramatically out of position on the edge of his own box, something spotted by Lazzari, whose intent to have a go immediately was obvious and whose execution of the long-range lob was perfect.

Goals from the half-way line are and should be cherished and here’s hoping that more ‘keepers suffer from rushes of blood to the head so we’ll see a few more of them when the leagues across Europe get into full swing over the coming weeks.
