Vine: Neymar and Fernanda Lima won the most awkward handshake of the night award at the Ballon d’Or awards

We don’t like using the phrase, but if ever anything could be described as ‘totes awks’ then surely this is it.

We don’t like using the phrase, but if ever anything could be described as ‘totes awks’ then surely this is it.

As much as we’d like them just to announce the winner of the Ballon d’Or and leave it at that, FIFA, as is their wont, have dragged the life out of the ceremony itself by presenting a whole load of other awards and interviewing ex-players and FIFA dignitaries to increase the suspense ahead of the main event.

Neymar was in attendance having been nominated for the Puskas award for Best Goal (which was deservedly won by Zlatan Ibrahimovic) and was also on hand to speak about Brazil’s hosting of the World Cup later this year.

Unfortunately for the brilliant Brazilian, his appearance at the ceremony in Zurich will probably be remembered only for a cringe-worthy handshake with host Fernanda Lima, which eventually ended with Lima going to put her hand around Neymar’s back and the Barcelona forward grabbing his compatriot halfway up her arm.

It possibly could have only been more embarrassing had Lima pulled her hand away and left Neymar hanging, but it’s still pretty cringe all the same. Ouch.
