Meyler seemed to claim it was accidental, but it certainly did not look good.
The Irish international became involved in a tussle for the ball with the Manchester United starlet in the final minute of United’s 3-1 win over Hull City at Old Trafford, a game in which United debutant James Wilson grabbed a brace and Nemanja Vidic (and possibly Ryan Giggs) played his last game at Old Trafford.
After Januzaj went to ground on the endline, Meyler’s studs connected with Januzaj’s shin and although the gesture he made afterwards indicated innocence, he did seem to leave his foot there longer than seemed necessary.
The referee didn’t take any action afterwards so Meyler is in danger of facing retrospective action for the incident, but should he face punishment that could rule him out of the FA Cup Final against Arsenal on Saturday week?
