Argentinian icon, the man viewed by many as the greatest footballer of all time, Diego Maradona is to make a sensational return to playing football.

At the ripe old age of 53, Diego Armando Maradona Franco has decided that retirement isn’t for him and is set to return to the game which he graced so beautifully in the 70s, 80s and 90s. According to the Mirror the great man is set to sign for Argentinian fifth tier club, Deportivo Riestra. The tiny club from the capital Buenos Aires, which plays its home matches in a 3,000 seater stadium, have said that Maradona (pictured below last week in Rome at a tax hearing) will make his debut on March 23rd.

The club is owned by his close friend and lawyer, Victor Stinfale who has convinced Maradona to dust off the boots and return to the beautiful game. We’re pretty sure it’s some sort of publicity stunt, but the man who scored 311 goals in 589 senior appearances over a glittering, if somewhat controversial career, is always remembered fondly here and we wish him well.

Stanley Matthews played at the top level in England till he was 50. Okay, maybe Diego is slightly heavier around the gills than the svelte Matthews, but wouldn’t it be lovely to see a hint of this again?….
