Who else wants to see Will Smith punch an alien in the face for Independence Day 2?

Bill Pullman promised in the original film that the human race would not vanish without a fight and neither will the Independence Day franchise, as a sequel is finally coming.

Released in 1996, the original was one of the biggest box office hits of the 1990s, creating a megastar of Will Smith and kicking off the decade's disaster movie trend.

However, it has taken nearly two decades to finalise a sequel - with reports in late 2011 claiming that Will Smith was refusing to be part of director Roland Emmerich's back-to-back sequels plan without a $50 million salary.

Now co-writer Dean Devlin has said that he and Emmerich have "a worthy concept" and are waiting for the pieces to come together - especially that $50 Will Smith piece, we'd imagine.

"I can tell you that Roland and I have been working together for the first time in 11 years and we’re every excited about the idea of doing it," Devlin told The Hollywood Reporter.

"Whether or not we can make this happen, if we can get all the pieces to come together, that’s gonna be challenging. But creatively, for the very first time since we did the original, I feel we have a worthy concept, a worthy path to go.

"We didn’t want to make a movie because it was financially a good idea, we only wanted to do it when we had an idea and a concept that creatively felt like it honored the first one - that it felt like an organic sequel as opposed to ‘let’s just go make some more money.' I feel like we got it.

"I think it took a long time, but I feel like we finally got something that really feels like, 'that’s worth seeing as a sequel to Independence Day.'"

As long as the sequel has the same dubious pro-smoking message as the original (remember Jeff Goldblum's character lighting up his first-ever cigar at the finale) and Will Smith punching an alien square in the face, we'll be onboard.
