Yes, Hollywood is actually going to remake Scarface

If Universal have their way, we could soon be saying hello to their little remake, as the studio apparently has plans to redo 1983 crime classic Scarface.

That's right, evidently their studio is "First you get the money, then you get the power..." and then presumably you get revenue from a recent special edition Blu-ray release and start all over again.

According to Deadline Hollywood, a new actor will be filling the role that was made iconic by Al Pacino, though perhaps not by playing a new version of Tony Montana. Universal are apparently meeting writers to help script a new version of the tale, while producer of the 1983 version, Martin Bregman, will return to the franchise.

Surprisingly, the studio does intend the movie to be a remake, reboot or sequel. Rather, as Deadline explains:

"It will take the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition."

So in other words, the remake isn't officially a remake and may not feature Tony Montana and a Miami setting.

It should be noted, however, that Brian de Palma's 1983 classic was in a fact a remake of a 1932 Scarface, which centred around an Italian gangster taking over Chicago. So technically, Universal are just repeating what has gone before, only with the chance that the legacy and goodwill associated with Pacino's version could be squandered if they stuff up a modern iteration of the franchise.

On the other hand, if the new Scarface features a few new iconic scenes, it'll give rappers plenty of  inspiration for at least the next 15 years.
