A Kenyan orphanage has leveraged social media and viral videos to raise some funds for a brand new football field

A group of Kenyan orphans and a few volunteers put together a number of videos for YouTube that managed to go viral, raise awareness and more importantly get some much-needed funds for their orphanage.

Dan Frieman, a Canadian student who came up with the idea of doing the videos while he was volunteering in the Grace Care orphanage, decided to make the videos about iconic moments in sports history, and chose one of the NBA’s most famous moments when in 1987 Larry Bird won the game in the Eastern Conference Finals for the Celtics with an incredible steal in the last minute.

Their video went viral when it went online in November last year, ending up on Yahoo! News, ESPN and it was even shown on the big screen at Madison Square Garden for a stadium full of people to see, and the momentum gathered from there.

According to what the lads at Mashable have reported, this week the charity behind the whole thing, Lift the Children has reported that the campaign raised enough money for them to buy a plot of land and make a playing field for the kids, as well as having enough space to build new classrooms and get a secondary school in too for the older kids to continue their education.

Fair play we say, most people just use the internet to put up videos of their cats, so this makes a pretty decent (and yes, dare we say it even heartwarming) change.
