Wayne Rooney is supposedly back on Arsenal’s radar once again and Falcao could be set for a move away from Monaco weeks after joining the Ligue 1 outfit for a ridiculous fee.
Exciting and all as the transfer window can be from time to time, we doubt we’re the only ones extremely happy that the return of the Premier League will mean actual football takes centre stage until Jim White is removed from his cryogenic chamber in time for Deadline Day at the end of the month.
Speculation is a little quieter than usual on the first day of the new season, but there is still plenty about for those who need a fix, starting with a report in the Daily Mirror suggesting that Arsenal will renew an interest in Wayne Rooney that was first highlighted at the beginning of the summer.
Like most of the rumours this summer, this one takes the 2+2=5 approach based on Chelsea apparently giving up on their pursuit of the Manchester United striker and the acquisition of Luis Suarez proving out of reach for the Gunners after an apology he is supposed to have made (there appears to be confusion over that one) to the Liverpool squad and management this week.
The Mirror say that Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazidis has made an offer and Rooney’s camp has been sounded out, but the thing that really might turn the tide is that, get this, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott joked with Rooney in England camp this week that he should join them at the Emirates. Sold!
With interest in Rooney gone a little cold for the time being at least, Chelsea would do well to weigh up what’s happening with a previous target of theirs, Falcao, who, according to the Express, could be moved on after playing only two games since making a £50million plus move from Atletico Madrid in the summer.
As a Principality, Monaco’s players are not subject to the same tax laws as every other club in Ligue 1, something which, quite understandably, has caused dissatisfaction amongst the hard-up-for-cash PSG and other French clubs. Should Monaco be asked to fall into line they would have to get rid of some of their expensively-acquired assets, none of whom were more expensively acquired than the Colombian sharpshooter. Best watch this space.
Whatever about Falcao, Chelsea’s links with Samuel Eto’o are the subject of a lot of press talk with the Daily Mail again mentioning it today, while the Metro suggest that Jose Mourinho might look closer to his own homeland with a move for Porto’s Jackson Martinez.
In Manchester, meanwhile, the Daily Mail say that David Moyes is increasingly confident of poaching Marouane Fellaini from his old club Everton, who, if you believe the Sun, want to take Gareth Barry from Manchester City.
Speaking of Manchester, in an interesting move which we can’t guarantee wasn’t influenced in any way by Manchester City, Marcos Navas, brother of Jesus Navas, has signed for League Two club Bury and will be able to help his brother, a notorious sufferer of homesickness, settle in in the North-West.
Finally, The Star say sat Pablo Osvaldo will turn down Southampton and join AVB’s revolution at Spurs instead.
