Despite the criticism fired in his direction, Arsene Wenger looks likely to lead his team to the group stages of the Champions League after a dominant display in Turkey tonight.
Even the most hardened Arsenal supporters were not overly confident of reaching the European promised land with a damaging home defeat to Aston Villa, a few injury concerns and the lack of any notable signings, but they dominated the match against a Fenerbahce side that contained a few familiar names.
Laurent Kosciely was forced off with a nasty facial injury, but the home side struggled to threaten the Arsenal goal and Kieran Gibbs put the visitors up with his first goal in Europe after good work from Theo Walcott – he must have had John Giles’ criticism ringing in his ears – before Ramsey made the tie more comfortable with a strike that the Turkish goalkeeper will not look back on too fondly.
Fenerbahce did offer more of a threat after the interval, but a penalty from Olivier Giroud meant a comfortable away victory for the Gunners.
