The Boys in Green are seeing red today as Stoke are down to nine men against Newcastle
It might just be one of those days for Stoke today, as it seems that not only are they without their first choice goalkeeper after Asmir Begovic broke a finger yesterday in training, but they are also down to nine men against Newcastle.
Both of the lads who saw red are also Irish, with Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson committing fouls that referee Martin Atkinson judged to be worthy of a sending off. Whelan had already been booked when he seemed to kick the calf of Cabaye, and Marc Wilson gave away a penalty when he pulled Loic Remy back as he charged into the box. Atkinson judged it a clear goalscoring opportunity, and the Irishman was sent for an early bath.
Mark Hughes was not happy with either decision we imagine, but saw himself sent to the stands too after remonstrating with the fourth official about Whelan’s second yellow in what must not have been a very respectful manner, throwing his coat in the air in exasperation.
Before all that drama, Stoke had been palying well and got the lead through this brilliant goal from Liverpool loanee Assaidi.
