One of the greatest players in recent memory looks to be on the verge of retirement

Alessandro del Piero is calling time on his footballing career as he hangs up his boots behind the curtain that’s coming down on his time at Sydney FC. What we’re trying to say is that he’s retiring, according to what The Sydney Morning Herald are reporting. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

The veteran Italian moved to the A-League in 2012 to Sydney FC, in a move that raised a few eyebrows, but, as a statement released by the club announcing that he will not be returning this season said, his impact on the game Down Under has been huge.

“His signing was the biggest in Australian football history and it lifted Sydney FC and the A-League onto the world stage”, the statement read, adding “Together we have achieved a lot and Sydney FC has grown in every way, with record crowds and memberships and huge interest in our club both domestically and internationally”.

At age 39, the likely thing for him to do now is to finish his career, and in a statement on his own website, he said that “I just need some time to think over all the prospective opportunities for my future”, but that the time had come to say goodbye to Australia.

Any shouts for a nostalgic call up to the Italian World Cup squad? We think that, just like Rocky, he’s still got one big fight left in the tank. Here’s a few of his best goals, we think that should suffice as a reason to give him a call, Cesare.
