How wearable technology will shape our future

It’s science week and we’re very excited.

We’re living in a unique age where the fantastical inventions we grew up watching and reading about are coming true before our very eyes, some with more success than others…

Wearable technology is the next big thing in the world of science and here’s a few pieces we can’t wait to get our hands on.

1. Kerv

If you’re anything like JOE than your morning routine revolves around a drowsy search for your wallet and keys.

The inventors behind Kerv feel your pain and have engineered an elegant solution.

Kerv is the world’s first contactless payment ring which can be used anywhere they have a contactless payment sign. There’s no pairing or charging required, and the device is both shock and water resistant.

Since it first came to the world’s attention through a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, the boffins behind the Kerv have been refining and perfecting their product for the market.

2. Quell

This is a wonder tool that could change your life if you suffer from chronic pain.

In the above video, the man reviewing Quell has suffered from sciatic pain for most of his life with only sleep inducing opiates to provide respite.

After attacking some Quell pads, his ability to manage his pain changed everything.

Quell stimulates sensory nerves and these sensory nerves carry neural pulses to your brain. These neural pulses trigger a natural response that blocks pain signals in your body, allowing the wearer to almost immediately enjoy a better quality of life.

3. Rovables

According to its developers from MIT and Stanford, Rovables are the future of wearable technology.

If you’re not enamoured with the idea of some robotic creepy crawlies traversing your body, we understand your concerns but this technology is jaw dropping.

These tiny sensor-loaded robots are designed to crawl around your body to perform tasks ranging from helping you to dress yourself, tapping on your shoulder to alert you to new messages and beyond. When they’re not being used, the rovables can make their way to your pocket or a charging station.

4. Beddit

If you have trouble getting a good night sleep, this wearable technology acts like a sort of personal slumber coach.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to wear a wire laden nightcap or a proton pack underneath your pyjamas. A thin, sensor-laden film is placed between your mattress and bedsheet. This film records your sleep pattersn, night time movements, snoring etc.

This all feeds back to a computer which uses an algorithm to suggest improved sleeping habits for the user. The concept of a bad night’s sleep might be unthinkable in just a few short years.

5. Nike’s self lacing sneakers

Do you recall seeing these beauties and wanting a pair immediately?

Well luckily for you, technology has caught up with your dreams and a real, honest to goodness pair of self-lacing sneakers from Nike will be available to the public on November 28. Check out the video below to see them modeled by a certain internationally beloved movie star…
