Galway pub is asking the Irish public to drink less alcohol in a bid to raise funds for the homeless

Paul Moore

A really lovely idea.

If you’ve been to An Pucan in the heart of Galway City, you’ll know that the venue is one of the most popular locations around, in fact, it even won the Best Native Irish Pub award at the recent Irish Pubs Global Awards.

While Christmas is a time for being merry and festive, the owners of An Pucan have clearly been moved by the recent activism and humanitarian work of those involved at Apollo House.

After witnessing the extent of the escalating homeless crisis in Ireland, the owners posted this appeal to their Facebook page.

It reads as follows:

In 2017 An Pucan is asking you to drink less pints.

This is an unusual post and one we considered over the last week or so after seeing all the great work that has gone on around Galway, Dublin and indeed all across Ireland, and we thought how can we help? We decided that we would ask you to Drink Less Pints!

So, after a few days of consideration, we decided that we should run a one year campaign to encourage Ireland to drink 200,000 less pints in 2017, to help raise €1million euro for the homeless. This is a huge issue in Galway, but its not just Galway, it’s around Ireland.

In recent days, Glen Hansard has brought this topic right up on so many peoples Facebook news feeds and that’s fantastic, fair play to him and the countless others working with Home Sweet Home, you’re all an inspiration and we thank you.

Now its time for us, the people, to do something about this issue which for far too long has gone ignored by the powers that be. One Million Euro can and will make a massive difference.

We are encouraging you to have just one less drink per week or month, or whatever you can, and donate weekly or monthly to our campaign for Focus Ireland.

Over the next 12 months we will have bucket collections, events, fundraisers and more. So we urge you to share, we urge you donate and we want you to help us make a huge difference in Ireland.

Many Thanks
Doug Leddin & Kieran O’Malley & The entire An Púcán team!
