If you’ve ever been told that cursing is a sin, you’ve our permission to say ‘f**k that’ because it turns out that people who frequently curse are far more honest than others.
Ok, in terms of The Ten Commandments “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” does rank higher than “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour (basically lying)”, but research by Dr David Stillwell, a lecturer in Big Data Analytics at the University of Cambridge, has proven that people who frequently use profanity are more f**ing trustworthy than most.
In his study, 276 people were asked to write down their favourite swear words before taking a lie detector test. The research showed that those who wrote down the filthiest words were the least likely to lie.
We can only imagine what filthy words were actually jotted down on those lists!
Dr Stillwell says that: “The relationship between profanity and dishonesty is a tricky one. Swearing is often inappropriate but it can also be evidence that someone is telling you their honest opinion. Just as they aren’t filtering their language to be more palatable, they’re also not filtering their views.”
If you’re looking for further proof that people who curse are the shit, a second test which involved collecting data from 75,000 Facebook users should do the trick.
In this test, the researchers measured the frequency of how often people swore in their online posts. The research discovered that those who used more curse words were also more likely to use language patterns that have been shown in previous research to be related to honesty.
Fuck yeah!
