Three charged over incident that left teenage girl with injuries “so severe” they could not be x-rayed

Three teenagers have been charged in Bangor, County Down in conjunction with a brutal assault on a 16-year-old girl that took place on the night of Friday, 20 April.

The incident was reported to the PSNI at approximately 8pm that evening after the young female was attacked in the seafront area of Bangor around 7.30pm.

According to Inspector Gerry McGrath, a group of teenagers carried out the assault, which resulted in “a number of facial injuries.”

McGrath confirmed the severity of the attack, which resulted in the girl sustaining a number of facial injuries.

“She has been treated in hospital but her injuries are so severe that medical staff will not be able to carry out x-rays on her face until next week,” he said.

“We have identified all of the suspects involved, two of whom have been arrested. The others are being actively sought by police.”

The PSNI continue to appeal for witnesses of the assault – footage of which was shared across social media over the weekend.

The video has since been taken down, at the request of the police.

The three charged are aged between 16 and 18.

A 16-year-old female, who had been released on bail but subsequently charged, has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with assault, aiding and abetting grievous bodily harm, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He remains in police custody and is aiding police with their inquiries.

An 18-year-old female has also been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

McGrath said: “While we appreciate the support of the local community and understand their shock at this assault, we would ask that members of the public do not use social media as a means of progressing this investigation.”
