Movies on TV

Have you seen the rain out there?

Why would you bother leaving the house? Especially not when there are so many decent films on TV.

Here at JOE, we just want what’s best for our readers, so we’re recommending that ye stay out of the cold, get some popcorn and enjoy what television has to offer tonight.

Calvary — 9:15pm — RTÉ2

A film absolutely studded with Irish stars, including Brendan Gleeson, Aiden Gillen, Chris O’Dowd and Dylan Moran, Calvary is an incredible dark comedy and mystery that centres around Ireland’s complicated history with the Catholic church. From the writer behind The Guard.

Allied — 9pm — Channel 4

An extremely tense thriller — kind of like Mr. and Mrs. Smith take two set during World War 2 and with Marion Cotillard instead of Angelina Jolie. Brad Pitt is still about though. If you want to stay on the edge of your seat all evening, then this is the movie for you.

The Prestige — 9pm — Sky One

One of Christopher Nolan’s less heralded films, but anything from the mind of the man responsible for Memento, Inception and The Dark Knight is worth watching. This one features Christian Bale and the greatest showman himself Hugh Jackman as a pair of performing magicians out to sabotage one another’s success. Also features Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and THE David Bowie.

The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift — 8pm — ITV2

This is the Fast and Furious film that is set in Tokyo.

First Blood — 9pm — ITV4

A movie that might be better known by its unofficial name: Rambo. Co-written and starring Sylvester Stallone. Features a lot of bloodshed, rampaging and Vietnam flashbacks. If that’s your kind of thing then this movie is ALL for you.

Training Day — 11.05pm — ITV4

It might just be Denzel Washington’s most iconic performance ever. Washington plays a corrupt cop training in Ethan Hawke’s Officer Hoyte. Together, the pair of them smoke PCP, fight some crimes, commit other crimes, and it all comes together for one of the best films ever made. Perfect late night viewing.

Vanilla Sky — 9pm — Syfy

Tom Cruise has made a lot of great films. He’s made some terrible films. And he’s made some weird films that are hard to categorise. Vanilla Sky is in that category. Something like a sci-fi film, it’s not always easy to know what the heck is going on with this one. Nice twisty plot though!
