Speaking on Morning Ireland on Monday, Garda Inspector Brian Downey said that it is not a criminal investigation.
An Garda Síochána and the Master of the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin have appealed to the mother of the baby found on a beach in Balbriggan in Dublin over the weekend to come forward.
Speaking on Morning Ireland on Monday, Garda Inspector Brian Downey appealed for the mother of the child to come forward, confirming that the girl or the woman who gave birth to the child is not in trouble and that there will be no criminal investigation.

“Our priority is her health,” said Inspector Downey, who added that An Garda Síochána want to create a safe environment so that the mother of the baby can come forward.
The baby found on Bell’s Beach in Balbriggan has been named Belle and speaking to Morning Ireland on Monday, Rhona Mahony, Master of the National Maternity Hospital, said that the hospital would like to help Belle’s mother as they have concerns for her physical and mental wellbeing.
Mahony described the situation as “heartbreaking” but offered assurances that Belle’s mother would be dealt with in confidence.
In a statement on Sunday, An Garda Síóchána continued to appeal for witnesses and revealed that, as per the results of a post mortem examination carried out on Sunday, the child was a full term baby girl and there was no foul play involved in her death.
