A reward of up to £10,000, provided by the Crimestoppers charity, is being offered to anyone that can provide information which leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder of Lyra McKee.
The reward will only qualify if information is passed to Crimestoppers’ 0800 555 111 number or via the untraceable anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
Lyra McKee, aged 29, died as a result of injuries sustained when she was shot in Fanad Drive on Thursday, 18 April.
Her funeral was held in Belfast on Wednesday, and a host of prominent politicians from Ireland and the UK were in attendance.
Leo Varadkar, Mary Lou McDonald, Arlene Foster, Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May were among the many that attended the funeral service in St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast. At the funeral, Father Martin Magill was given a standing ovation for addressing the politicians in attendance, asking: “Why in God’s name does it take the death of a 29-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her, to get to this point?”
Speaking about the offer of a £10,000 reward for information, Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said: “Lyra tragically lost her life when bullets were fired indiscriminately into the community in Creggan. It was a senseless murder of a gifted young woman and Lyra’s family and loved ones have been left devastated by their loss.
“I want to find the people who murdered Lyra and the information that can help us bring Lyra’s killer to justice lies within the local community. People saw the gunman – people know who is responsible. I’m asking them to come forward and help us.
“We have received widespread public support to date and if this reward further encourages some individuals to come forward, this may help assist us in our efforts to get some justice for Lyra and her loved ones.”
The senior detective leading the investigation into the murder of Miss McKee has said that more than 140 people have contacted police with information via the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP).
