Irish Rail has said it will give 25 years free travel to the baby girl born on the Galway to Dublin train on Tuesday afternoon.
The woman went into labour shortly after the train departed Galway after 3pm on Tuesday, and the baby was delivered at Kildare Station after a stop of 80 minutes.
The woman was aided by an off-duty doctor as well as two nurses and another member of the public.
Irish Rail said they will offer the baby girl 25 years free travel and hope to make contact with the mother in the coming days to arrange it.
They also thanked the members of staff and the public who helped out during the situation.
Speaking to JOE, an Irish Rail spokesperson said: “We are delighted, and grateful to both customers and staff who assisted, that the mother safely gave birth to her baby daughter on board the 15.05hrs Galway to Heuston as it was stopped at Kildare Station yesterday.
“In what must have been a very stressful situation, the response of customers and staff in both assisting and ensuring the privacy of the mother was excellent.
“We wish mother and baby well, and respecting her privacy would be delighted to arrange for free travel for her new daughter throughout her childhood and up to age 25 (under 5s go free in any event on out services, but the uniqueness of the situation certainly merits many more years!).
“We will make contact with the mother over the coming days to make arrangements.”
