Gardaí urged the public to remove property from their vehicles and ensure they’re locked and alarmed.

A man in his 20s has been arrested and charged in relation to 11 incidents in Cork on 2 January this year.

Gardaí were called to a house in Duntahane Park in Fermoy around 6am on 2 January when the occupant of the house came downstairs to find the TV had been stolen along with other household items.

An examination of the scene was carried out and CCTV was gathered in the area by Gardaí.

More reports were received that three cars in the same housing estate and three cars in Carrigaline were also broken into with cash, sunglasses, headphones, bank cards and jewellery stolen.

A bank card stolen from one of the cars was later used at a petrol station in Cork city.

Attempts were also made to gain entry to three properties in Carrigaline.

Gardaí from Fermoy executed a searched warrant on a house in Waterford on 19 January where they recovered a TV which is believed to have been stolen from the house in Fermoy.

A man in his 20s was arrested in Cork city on 27 January and brought to Fermoy Garda Station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

He has since been charged in relation to all of the above incidents and is due to appear before Fermoy District Court on 5 February.

“Wherever you park your car, we would always advise you to take your property with you and ensure the vehicle is locked and alarmed,” Crime Prevention Officer for the Cork North Division, Sergeant John Kelly said.

“I know it’s the last thing you want to do after a hard day’s work and sometimes it is impractical to remove tools and equipment into the house, but we must try make it difficult for criminals who see our vehicles as easy targets.”
