Easy Exercise of the Week: Close Grip Bench Press

Eric Lalor

This exercise will give your triceps the workout they need.

Instructions:

  • Lie back on a flat bench. Using a close grip (around shoulder width), lift the bar from the rack and hold it straight over you with your arms locked. This will be your starting position.
  • As you breathe in, bring it down slowly until you feel the bar on your chest.
  • Ensure that the arms are close to the torso as this will maximise the tricep workout.
  • After a second pause, bring the bar back to the starting position as you breathe out and push the bar using your triceps muscles. Lock your arms, hold for a second and then start coming down slowly again.
  • Try to come down slower than coming up. You should aim to bring the bar down twice as long as the time taken to raise it which will again ensure you feel tricep burn.
  • Repeat this for the desired amount of repetitions.
