Quitters never win? But what if you are quitting smoking? Eric’s diary – Part Ten

The raging battles continue

Eric Lalor

The raging battles continue.

It’s hard to believe that this is the tenth diary entry I’ve done. Happy to say I am now 45 days off the smokes and more than satisfied with that.

Live shows

Last week I told you about the Sprite Refreshing Truth tour that I took part in for JOE.ie touring a few Irish colleges.

The week finished off with me doing a show on Friday in Sligo with Ardal O’Hanlon and then on Saturday night I had the pleasure of opening for PJ Gallagher in a completely sold-out Vicar St show.

1200 people packed into the amazing venue.

I’ve played in Vicar St many times before and that’s not meant to sound as arsey as it reads, but Saturday night was very special indeed.

Inner turmoil

There is an aura about that place and the perfect place to do comedy. It lifts you like no other and when the gig goes well, you feel ten feet tall coming off that stage.

I noted that this was the first Vicar St show where I wouldn’t be smoking before or after. That was a little unsettling I’ll admit. There were one or two moments of inner madness when I actually thought about it.

crazy

Thankfully, the inner voice was deemed a lunatic and was shut up sharpish.

Chat quit

Everyone is different and cravings affect people in different ways. Some still get cravings long after they’ve quit. I’m 45 days off them and you would think they’d be minimal at this time.

Granted, it’s not every day, but on Wednesday, for some reason, like K.D Lang,  it was one big long constant craving. I had signed up to the HSE Quit campaign and went to the website to see what tips I could get.

I saw they had a live chat function so I logged on there and spoke to someone called Shaun. Shaun was great. Never patronising and very practical and made me see the light so to speak.

He obviously recognised the symptoms I was displaying and offered me solutions. I felt it was very helpful and even if it’s just for the distraction alone, it’s a very worthwhile service.

He didn’t even ask what I was wearing like those other live chat things I’ve been on. What?

PJ and Damian

I had my last visit into the lads on 4FM on the PJ and Damian show and it seemed like a good day to finish my weekly radio slot, given it is Good Friday.

The lads have been a great support along with their listeners and I will miss the weekly craic I’ve had with them. Here is the interview I did with them:
