Once you’ve checked out how to save a few quid by changing the light bulbs in your house, you can make a start on making your gas boiler more energy efficient.

Gas heating

Gas is a great resource to have, but at times if can be fairly expensive to run. That’s why you should do your best to conserve what you can where you can and one of the best ways to do that is by getting your boiler serviced.

But what does a service consist of? Do you have to get out of that nicely cultivated groove in the couch that you’ve been working so hard on? No. Well, apart from opening the front door to let the professional in.

A trained service technician will ensure that your boiler is functioning properly and working to the high standards set by the boiler manufacturer.

A qualified and experienced service technician should carry out the service for you as it’s not the wisest of moves messing around with gas if you’re not qualified. The folks over at Electric Ireland, who know a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff like this, recommend that all gas boilers should be serviced by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) and not just some Joe Soap with a van. Find out more on that over here.

Always get a pro when working with gas

Saving a few quid isn’t the only reason to get your boiler serviced. That’s because the efficiency of all boilers deteriorates with use, so getting yours checked regularly can prevent potential gas or carbon monoxide leaks – which can kill if they’re not detected on time. Electric Ireland is the only energy supplier to carry out a combustion efficiency test when servicing your boiler. (For more on Electric Ireland’s €99 boiler service follow the link.)

Sometimes it’ll be the case that your boiler has just seen better days and the only thing left to do is upgrade. Most pre-2008 boilers operate at around 78% efficiency, which means that more than €1 in every fiver you spend on heating is wasted. The older the boiler, the higher that figure is likely to be.

The latest condensing boilers reduce that waste to less than 10% because they use fuel more efficiently.

So make sure to check out the Electric Ireland website for more on having your boiler serviced or upgraded.
