Brylcreem, 80-year veterans of the war against bad hair, recently added a number of new products to their range.

With new competitors such as Moosehead entering the ring, Brylcreem was real in need of a revamp and the company told JOE.ie that they are now well equipped to take on all comers.

“With 80 years of experience in male grooming, Brylcreem continues to perform, moving from strength to strength and taking the style of men seriously,” said Jonathan Bull, Brylcreem marketing manager.

But can the new Brylcreem range really measure up against the next generation of hair products currently spoiling us for choice? JOE.ie decided to find out.

Brylcreem Cream

The first thing you notice about Brylcreem Cream when you pop open the 75ml tub it comes in, is its distinctive, extremely likable smell. Another stand-out feature is its smooth creamy texture which when applied gives a natural finish that is neither glossy nor matt. This is the type of product to use if you want your hair in a certain style, but don’t want it immediately obvious that you’ve used anything beyond a hairbrush.

Brylcreem Cream doesn’t dry out and remains re-workable for the day. However, it does seem to lose some of its hold eventually and your hair can flatten out a tad in the latter hours, particularly if it’s on the longer side. Overall though, this is a positive addition to the men’s hair shelf and very much fills a niche for those chasing that under-styled do.

Brylcreem Clay

Brylcreem Clay is something of a triumph and would have to be the best product currently on offer from Brylcreem. This gear is a remarkably rigid clay. It’s so firm that if you could get the out of the tub in one piece you could pop it into a sock and beat a man to death with it. Once you get some of it onto your hands and start to work it between your palms however, it quickly warms and becomes easy to work in.

You need just a miniscule amount in order to get your hair styled firmly into place and once shaped, it’s going nowhere until you decide to re-work it. Brylcreem Clay gives an ultra-matt finish and is great for creating a choppy, messed up style with short hair or something more ambitious for those of you with slightly longer tresses.

If your hair is on the thin side then this stuff is for you. Its heavy texture, combined with a matt finish makes your hair appear thicker – it’s practically hair-in-a-tub. It takes a couple of washes to get out, but that’s a small price to pay for having one of the best men’s hair styling products around in your armory.

This product is way ahead of practically every other hair product out there with only Moosehead’s Grubby Putty, which gives a similar type of result, its only real competitor. There is a bit of a trade-off however. The two products are within the same price range but although Moosehead’s tub is considerably bigger, you need less of the Brylcreem Clay per do.

Another big strike in favour of Brylcreem Clay is that it is almost omnipresent in supermarkets, so you won’t be faced with buying some rubbish you don’t really want when you go shopping because your favourate isn’t stocked.
