The Timahoe Male Choir performed during a media preview of Electric Picnic, a year on from their turn on the main stage, and they are back for more.

“More of a kind of a men’s shed thing,” is how member Raymond Quigley described the choir, which he said came about “as people having a get-together, to have a bit of craic, sing a few songs”.

This is the 21st Electric Picnic, and within 72 hours roughly 80,000 people will be standing where they were.

Gates at Stradbally open on Thursday evening ahead of Friday’s kick-off, and the festival arrives with the strongest Irish presence it has had in years.

With a headline bill that its director reckons could hardly be improved on, and an unusually loud set of safety warnings attached. Here is where things stand before the tents go up.

Lewis Capaldi plays the main stage on Friday night, with Gorillaz and CMAT on Saturday night.

Festival director Melvin Benn said the line-up is “just amazing, and that adding Amble, as we did recently, was just the finishing touch”.

Of the main stage in particular, he said: “It could hardly be better.”

"Van the Man, I mean, gosh, just Van being here with us is going to be a treat," he added.

Amble and Van Morrison were among the acts added to the Electric Picnic line-up in the run-up to the weekend.

Elsewhere on the bill, the Dublin band Florence Road were on site on Tuesday previewing the set they will play on the Electric Arena stage on Sunday.

“We’re so excited,” singer and guitarist Lily Aron told RTÉ News. “It’s great to be amongst such amazing Irish talent; we couldn’t be prouder.”

What's new at Electric Picnic this year

New stages and areas are added to the Stradbally site every year, and organisers say there is no shortage of non-musical entertainment on the 2026 map either.

The other change is in tone. The HSE has issued a warning about the rise in availability of illegal ketamine and is advising festival-goers to take precautions, with medical teams and Gardaí on site to help anyone in difficulty.

The message from organisers is a simple one: if you need help over the weekend, ask for it.

If you are travelling down, it is worth a look at the banned items list before you pack, because the queue at the gate is not the place to discover you have got it wrong.

With 21 years in the game, Electric Picnic has become the closest thing Ireland has to a national end-of-summer gathering.

Its pull is now as much about who is on the smaller stages as who is closing the main one.

A weekend that puts Fontaines DC, CMAT, Amble and Florence Road in front of 80,000 people is a decent snapshot of where Irish music is in 2026.

The Timahoe choir, for their part, want to “build on the success” of last year, as RTÉ’s preview from Stradbally reported.

Which is a fairly good summary of the whole operation: a men’s shed choir from a Laois village and one of the biggest bands in the world, on the same patch of grass, for one weekend in August.
