Electric Picnic weather: Met Éireann forecasts a cooler, wetter weekend in Stradbally

After one of the warmer summers in years, the national forecaster expects thundery downpours to feature, the Irish Mirror reported.

The risk of heavy rain and thundery bursts increases from Wednesday 26 August onwards.

Friday looks the most manageable of the three days, Saturday should brighten after a wet morning, and Sunday is the one to plan around.

Extra.ie reported similar warnings of thunderstorms and localised flooding in the run-up to the weekend.

"Friday will bring a mix of bright or sunny spells and scattered showers," said Met Éirann. "Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees… On Saturday, rain in the morning will clear eastwards.

"Sunshine and showers will follow from the west in the afternoon… On Sunday, showery rain will spread eastwards across Ireland, heavy or thundery at times.

"It will be cooler with highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees," they added.

It is a noticeable step down from Met Éireann’s bank holiday forecast earlier this month, and a sign that the summer is winding up.

Lewis Capaldi, Gorillaz and Fontaines D.C. are among the headliners in Laois, with more names confirmed among the acts added to the Electric Picnic line-up in recent days.

There is still some uncertainty in the detail, but current indications point to an unsettled start to next week too, with rain or showers at times.

In short: wellies, not sandals.
