Infographic: How long it takes to earn a beer on minimum wage, country by country

There's nothing more Irish than measuring how expensive a country is by how much a beer costs

There’s nothing more Irish than measuring how expensive a country is by how much a beer costs

When Irish people travel abroad, there are a few things that we always do: complain about the weather being too hot or not hot enough, call home to find out if it’s raining, and of course, talk about how much the beer costs wherever we are.

Thanks to the folks at Quartz and their research, we now have all that information in a handy chart that we can consult prior to departure. They’ve compared the minimum wage in each country to the cost of a beer, and figured out how many hours you’d have to work on that lowest wage bracket to be able to afford a tipple at the weekend. While things aren’t quite as good here as they are in Puerto Rico, we’re still not too badly off, as we only have to work a half hour to earn a beverage.

Perspective is always a great thing to have, and as you can see in the case of Georgia, things could be a lot worse. The minimum wage there works out at something around 24c an hour, according to our figures and it takes over 15 hours to work up enough cash for a beer. That’s no craic.
