Ireland already tops list of world destinations for same-sex weddings

Well, that was quick

Ireland tops a Yahoo list of potential wedding destinations for same-sex couples.

Last weekend the country voted to legalise same-sex marriages and Yahoo has already classified this country as the best to get married in for lesbian and gay couples planning to travel abroad.

“Same-sex couples can now be legally married or have a commitment ceremony in an incredible variety of spectacular locations all over the globe,” Yahoo Travel says.

“From the world’s most beautiful beaches to the side of a volcano to a game reserve surrounded by wild animals.”

The top eight is as follows:

  • Ireland
  • Argentina
  • Hawaii
  • South Africa
  • Iceland
  • Tahiti
  • New Zealand
  • Uruguay

“With an incredible selection of castles, country house hotels, and historic properties, there will be no shortage of venue options,” writer Sophie Forbes says. “Vendors are already lining up offerings targeted at the LGBT community.”

Forbes does warn about some of the red tape faced by any couple hoping to marry in this part of the world.

“Both partners must spend at least 15 days in the country before getting a marriage license,” Yahoo! Travel points out. “You also have to notify the local government of your intent to marry there several months in advance.”

“This is great if you are taking some time to plan your nuptials, but not so great if you want to elope tomorrow.”
