More Bang For Your Buck: JOE’s favourite things that used to cost €1

Ah nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be, eh?

JOE

Ah nostalgia, it ain’t what it used to be, eh?

What was it Bob Dylan sang again? “He’s a weird monkey, very funky.”

Actually, no, that wasn’t the lyric we were looking for. He actually sang “the times they are a-changin'” and he was right; it’s 2014  now, a time where the music is louder, kids are ruder and everything seems to be way more expensive. That’s right reader, JOE just became a grumpy old man.

Don’t scoff at us just yet though because we’ve proof that, in the past, you used to be able to get much more bang for your buck and way more for the princely sum of €1. Just check it out…

100 penny sweets

It’s all in the name, right? Wrong. Due to inflation, your beloved penny sweets now cost anything but. You’d be lucky to get 27 penny sweets for €1 now, never mind 100. What we wouldn’t give for our very own time machine (and a bag of strawberry bonbons) right about now.

Fuel

This time ten years ago a litre of fuel used to be cheaper. Much cheaper. Now, unfortunately, the cost of running a vehicle has sky-rocketed massively, as this very handy chart demonstrates.

And wait a second, shouldn’t you be trying to save the world anyway? That’s right, forget about using petrol altogether and try and run your car on the much more nature-friendly horse sh*t instead. Good luck with that though.

A 99 ice cream

What with the fantastic weather that the entire country’s been experiencing recently, we’re sure we’re not the only ones who have been craving the cold kiss of a refreshing and tasty ice cream, complete with a chocolate flake on top.

Problem is though, that once-aptly named ’99 is going to set you back a whopping €2.25 now. Not quite as catchy a name now, is it?

Your bus fare

There was a time when a €1 bus ticket would have taken you the whole way across town and back, just so you could visit your Aunty Bina. Nowadays though, it’ll cost you €1 to just ask the bus to pull in and stop.

Don’t try and look that fact up though because it’s probably not true. Still though, it’s undeniable that public transport is waaaaaay more expensive these days.

Two packets of Tayto

Those were the days, remember? Strolling into the local shop with your shiny €1 coin in your pocket and confidently ordering two – that’s right – TWO packets of Tayto. One packet of Cheese and Onion to fight off the hunger pangs and one packet of Smokey Bacon for dessert.

Not now though, no sir. Now you’d be lucky to get either the Cheese OR Onion for that kind of money.

In this time of scrimpin’ and savin’, you may not think that your beloved €1 coin is going to go as far as it once used to but we’ve got some great news for you. UPC are now offering you the chance to get your hands on Sky Sports for six months for the unbelievably low price of €1.
