PICS: The debate on how to pronounce Viscount (biscuits) may finally have been settled

Conor Heneghan

Which side are you on?

Though they originated in Britain, Viscount biscuits have been a common sight in Ireland for many, many years now.

Of course, as biscuits wrapped in foil, they would usually only be rolled out on special occasions but most of you will have tasted them at some point.

The deliciousness of that chocolate/mint combination is not in doubt, but what is in doubt is the pronunciation of the name of the biscuit itself, with some pronouncing it ‘Vai-count’ and others preferring the ‘VIZ-count’ option.

The latter pronunciation was used in a promotional clip for tonight’s episode of Bridget and Eamon on RTE 2 (see above) and it was that which prompted a heated debate in the house of JOE reader Isabella De Luca yesterday, a debate which she subsequently transferred to her Facebook page, where opinion was split right down the middle.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the matter.

Not content with the Wiki explanation, Isabella actually contacted Burton’s, the manufacturers of Viscount, to put it to bed once and for all.

Below is the response they provided her with.

Is that it settled then?

Cheers to Isabella de Luca for sending these our way. If you have something you would like to share with us, send it to our WhatsApp number 087-4001102, [email protected] or hit us up on Facebook or Twitter.
