The charity currently has 1,800 volunteers across 20 branches nationwide.
Samaritans Ireland has launched a major volunteer recruitment campaign aimed at encouraging people to join the charity in one of its 20 branches across the country.
The charity, which is best known for its 24-hour telephone support service, is also seeking to draw further attention towards similar support offered by SMS, email, face-to-face in communities and through written correspondence and in prisons.
Set up in Ireland during 1962, the service has listeners of various ages who typically dedicate three hours per week to people in need, with overnight shifts being required.
As well as providing emotional support, volunteers for Samaritans Ireland also undertake outreach in communities, fundraise and take on administrative roles, all of which ensure that the service remains available 24/7, all year round. Trained listeners give face-to-face support in branches, at festivals and various other events.
Urging more people to volunteer with Samaritans Ireland, Regional Director, Cindy O'Shea said: "Every six seconds someone in distress contacts Samaritans. We offer round-the-clock emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope with whatever life has thrown at them. We give them a safe place to talk in the knowledge they won’t be judged, but will be listened to.
