Study reveals the exact time that students should start secondary-school

We knew it

Paul Moore

We knew it.

All Irish students are biologically programmed to hate their 9am class on a Monday morning, it’s as common as that one lad that always arrives late to school, but it seems that there’s a legitimate scientific reason as to why we all loathe Monday morning lessons.

Research has revealed that some schools start their classes way too early and that there’s no real point to these very early lessons because adolescents haven’t got the required levels of sleep to be attentive in the classroom.

Here’s what most Irish students look like during that first class of the week.

Research by the American Academy of Pediatrics discovered that the average school in the US starts at 08:03, doesn’t that just sound horrific, but this early start is useless because the biological clock and attention span of most students doesn’t kick in until much later.

08:30 was suggested as the very earliest that stidents should start hitting the books.

Adolescents are required to get 8 hours and 30 minutes of sleep per night but this rarely happens because all teenagers are biologically programmed to stay up later than adults.

If you happen to be unfortunate enough to start your school at this god forsaken hour in the morning then it seems that not much information will be sticking in your noggin.

While I’m certain that most Irish students would love a later start to their classes, this would also mean that scheduling any after-school activities might become even trickier.

GAA training at 20:30 anyone?
