JOE

By Laura Anne Mooney

The Hollywood actor, Montgomery Clift was best known for his role as ‘Private E Lee Prewitt’ from the motion picture ‘From Here to Eternity’. Upon his death in 1966, the New York Times obituaries noted his portrayal of ‘moody, sensitive young men’.  The world loved to watch him think. His tempestuous and withdrawn approach to those around him, kept everyone guessing. Director John Huston , once referred to him as ‘mysterious. He always held something back.’

Tough without being macho, a complicated life off-screen left him a tortured soul. One thing was certain however, his style: confident, classic and clean.

Pictured here in the Savoy, England, 1950 it is apparent how this enigmatic actor became style icon. His slicked back hair and pensive brow makes for an effortlessly sharp look, timeless and coveted, it has been attempted by many. But before the Jimmy Deans the Johnny Depps and the Edward Cullens (Robert Pattinson) of this world, there was Montgomery Clift.
