The UK pub group JD Wetherspoon has decided against stocking what has to be the most Irish of all drinks in their first pub to open south of the border.

The first Irish Wetherspoons is set to open its doors for business this day next week on Carysfort Avenue in Blackrock on the site of the former Tonic Bar under the name the Three Tun Tavern.

However, patrons may be a tad surprised to hear that they won’t be able to wrap their lips around a pint of ‘The Black Stuff’, or Guinness, as it’s better known. While you won’t be able to get a pint of Guinness, you will be able to purchase Beamish and Murphy’s stouts.

The Irish Times reports: “It’s a brave move by the British chain given that Guinness accounts for one in every three pints of beer sold in Ireland”.

So why has the Three Tun Tavern decided against selling Guinness? “We like to sell our drink to customers at a certain price and the price that Diageo wanted us to sell the product at was too high,” a spokesman for Wetherspoons told The Irish Times yesterday.

Oh…

That means Guinness won’t be the only Diageo product to be missing from the Three Tun Tavern drinks menu as Smirnoff vodka, Bushmills whiskey, and Baileys Irish cream are also reportedly off the list.

However, there will still be plenty of Irish drinks brands to choose from including Jameson, Paddy, and Tullamore Dew, Ballygowan, Tom Crean’s Irish Lager, Franciscan Well Rebel Red and a rake of Irish craft beers.
