This competition is a sham and a fraud and a sham!
Local Eye, broadcast by RTE, has been casting a light on regional newspapers and how those papers cover the comings and goings of life in rural Ireland. Back in 2015, it threw up a classic that sounds like it was pulled straight from a Father Ted episode.
It’s been very enjoyable to watch because it’s full of the type of characters that you’ll find in towns and villages all over the country and gives an insight into the kind of fantastic stories that you’ll only find in local papers.
One such example was to be found in the most recent episode of Local Eye, where a local farmer in Crusheen in Clare, Pat Roseingrave, was explaining how a little creativity goes a long way when it comes to prize-winning bullocks.
Without wanting to spoil the clip below too much for you, Pat’s prize bull was consistently coming up short on the big day until he hit on a brainwave that led him to the title.

Pat’s companion in the clip is renowned seanchaí and Clare Champion contributor Eddie Lenihan and it should be pointed out that on the same day The Local Eye crew met Pat, he was raising funds for local special needs children with a competition to guess the weight of the bullock.
He ended up raising €4,000 for charity. What a man.
That said, he may well have lost the trust of his bull… which is punishment enough for a man who deals primarily in bulls.
