12 of the best scenes from LOST

12 great moments from one amazing show.

Rudi Kinsella

The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos… They all come close, but none will ever be the same as LOST.

LOST often gets a hard time, because of the general consensus that the show jumped the Dharma branded shark around season five. And maybe that’s true. But there is no denying that LOST had some of the most intense scenes in the history of television.

Even when it was at its most surreal, the show still had amazing characters, amazing writers and an amazing story. Here are some of the best scenes from the wonderful show. P.S: There’s loads of spoilers, obviously.

1) He wasn’t on the plane

The first glimpse we got of The Others, a mysterious group of people who were on the island before Oceanic flight 815 crashed on the island on that faithful day. The show had dozens of amazing cliff-hanger moments, and this was certainly one of them.

2) Guys… Where are we?

One of the most chilling lines from the entirety of the show. The flight members, in this moment, realise that it is extremely unlikely that anyone is coming to rescue them, as they hear a distress call that has been playing for 16 years.

3) Sawyer kills a polar bear

This is one of the first things that every LOST critic brings up when slating the show. Why was there a polar bear on an extremely hot island? Short answer: They were brought by the Dharma Initiative to be experimented on, and to see how they adapted to the warm climate. Regardless, this scene got people talking, and put LOST on the map, big time.

4) Got any milk?

Perhaps the best monologue, in a show full of amazing monologues. Ben Linus, pretending to be Henry Gale, strikes fear in the hearts of John Locke and Jack Shepard. Ben was later revealed to be the genius leader of The Others, and this scene was a glimpse into his evil but brilliant mind.

5) The Others

The opener to season three is such an exciting moment for LOST fans, as it is the first time we see the plane crash from the point of view of those already living on the island. We are introduced to the seemingly civilised lives of The Others, knowing just how much its about to change.

6) Hurley gets the car started

A rare moment of pure joy from what is otherwise a relatively depressing show. This moment really was needed.

7) We have to go back

One of the most iconic moments in television history. With the fans used to seeing flashbacks, in which we gained an insight into the past of our beloved characters, we assumed that this was the same as any other. With the episode drawing to a close, we realise that this one is in fact a flash forward, and that our heroes actually get off the island, and for some reason want to go back. CRAZY.

8) Charlie’s death

The saddest moment. Not just in television, but maybe in this writer’s entire life. Rest in peace, Charlie. See you in another life, brother.

9) Locke in the coffin

Another massive moment, when you find out the Jeremy Bentham (John Locke) is the dead man that the characters have been alluding to all season.

10) Desmond talks to Penny

One of the most genuine, pure love stories you’ll ever see on television. Desmond finally contacts his true love, and the woman who ultimately gets them all rescued, Penelope Widmore, and they share a beautiful moment. Please watch this and try not to cry, we dare you.

11) Juliet detonates the bomb…

After an absolute roller-coaster of an episode, Juliet, with her last action, detonates a hydrogen bomb, and thus changes the course of history.

12) We meet Jacob and MIB

A moment that shows us exactly how the rest of the episodes are going to go, and also does a job at showing the rich history that the island has. Fans would probably have wanted this conversation to go on for the whole episode, but we had to settle for 3.23 of pure gold.
