There was an absolutely brilliant Young Offenders singalong at Electric Picnic

Paul Moore

The Young Offenders

Brilliant scene in the show, brilliant scenes at the festival.

During the first season of Peter Foott’s wonderful tv adaptation of The Young Offenders, there are so many scenes that resonated with Irish audiences because just like the film, it managed to mix surreal comedy with some more emotional moments.

Truth be told, that scene in the first episode where Jock and Siobhan start shifting will forever be burned into our minds and as for the granny flashing, the lads trying to move the fridge and steal the gigantic fish, well, they’re just mad.

This being said, there’s a real heart to the show as seen by the singalong when Jock visited his mam’s grave, or the moment when Conor finally kissed Linda on the bus.

Regarding the season finale, Billy Murphy’s attempted hijacking of the bus may have been the most main plot line but there was also a wonderful moment when the entire bus burst into a version of After All by The Frank & Walters.

When we caught up with Jennifer Barry ahead of her new play, Girls and Dolls, opening in the Gaiety Theatre, she said that this whole scene took “eight days on the bus to film that episode. By the end, you just hear that song so much that you can’t get it out of your head. You can’t get away format. It got to Number 3 on iTunes. It’s amazing.”

Well, the song is showing no signs of losing its popularity because thousands of Electric Picnic revellers absolutely belted it out during the band’s recent performance in Laois.

What would you know, Billy Murphy (Shane Casey) even joined the lads on stage and fans went absolutely wild.

In fact, this clip is so good that Hilary Rose (Mairead) even shared it.

Take a look.

Jennifer Barry (The Young Offenders) stars alongside Jamie Lee O’Donnell (Derry Girls) in Girls and Dolls by Lisa McGee which plays for a limited run from 11th-15th September at The Gaiety Theatre, Dublin.
