The actress playing Lyanna Stark will be very familiar to a lot of Irish people

Alan Loughnane

You’ve seen her before…

Game of Thrones is over for at least another year, and rumours say it could be even longer, but we don’t want to believe such words.

We’re finally 110% sure of the origins of Jon Snow. We knew already, but it had never been said explicitly in the show… until the season finale.

The lie on which Robert Baratheon’s rebellion was built has been revealed. Rhaegar Targaryen didn’t kidnap and rape Lyanna Stark. The pair fell in love and got married in a secret ceremony.

They had a child who was named Aegon Targaryen, but we’ve been calling him Jon Snow for seven straight seasons.

During the episode, Bran looked into the past and saw the wedding between Rhaegar and Lyanna. This was the second time we’ve seen Lyanna in the series, having seen her at the end of season six in the Tower of Joy.

Did you recognise her?

Lyanna is being portrayed by Irish-Italian actress Aisling Franciosi. She was born in Italy and grew up in Dublin before studying in Trinity College.

Her most famous role to date is probably her portrayal of Katie Benedetto in the hugely popular TV series, The Fall.

The performance won her an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, and earned her plenty of critical acclaim.

Game of Thrones fans have also been commenting on the quality of the casting, as Arya is said to look like her aunt in the series.

A dead ringer…
