The fifth season of Archer airs in the US this coming Monday, but the ISIS team won’t be getting up to their usual espionage escapades.

Fans of the hit “animated espionage comedy” Archer might be a tad surprised to hear that the ISIS team will be giving up their usual spying duties in the US, as they’ll instead be heading to South America in order to start a drug cartel.

In a recent interview with Uproxx.com, Archer Executive Producer Matt Thompson announced some details of the show’s departure from the current plot saying, “We are now a f*cking drug cartel.”

“There is a big radical departure this season on Archer and that came about frankly because Adam [Reed] got bored. He is the sole writer of the show and he felt like he was spinning his wheels at some point.”

So the ISIS team is disbanding their current ops and are now heading to South America… with a ton of cocaine in tow.

“They’re just going to sell a ton of cocaine and everybody’s going to become a multi-millionaire and retire. Easy-peasy… And so it goes from there, and as you might expect, they are not so successful at selling one ton of cocaine.”

While the main characters will mostly stay the same, the kooky sex-crazed receptionist Carol, sorry, Cheryl will try her hand at becoming a country music star, which sees her changing her name (once again) to ‘Cherlene’.

“She’s on the road. She’s doing country songs, and we’re actually putting out a country album with the show this year. Not a joke. A country album. We’re doing “Danger Zone” as a country song. We’re doing “Eastbound & Down,” like from Smokey and the Bandit,” said Thompson.

That storyline should be interesting, seeing as the latest YouTube video released by FX leads us to believe Cheryl can’t sing for sh*t…
