A creepy Irish mystery thriller and 8 more new movies and shows to watch this weekend

Rory Cashin

This week also sees the return of the erotic thriller and the remake of a much-loved comedy classic.

This week is JAMMED with new movies and shows to enjoy in cinemas and at home, so let us get straight to it!

Here are the new cinema releases, which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 18 March.

WOLF

Filmed in Ireland with a very impressive cast including George MacKay (1917), Lily-Rose Depp (Voyagers), Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes), Fionn O’Shea (Normal People) and Lola Petticrew (Dating Amber), it tells the story of a man (MacKay) who believes he is a wolf trapped inside the body of a man, and the people he meets at a clinic who attempt to “cure” him of his ailment.

Check out our interviews with MacKay, O’Shea, Petticrew and the movie’s writer/director Nathalie Biancheri right here:

X

A group of young filmmakers head to Texas to make an adult movie, but when the locals realise what they’re doing, the stars and director suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives. The director of some great scary movies (The House of the Devil, V/H/S, The Innkeepers) has gathered a great cast for this, including Jenny Ortega (Scream), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Kid Cudi (Don’t Look Up), Martin Henderson (The Ring) and Mia Goth (Suspiria).

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

FRESH

Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) headline this “romantic” “comedy” about a woman who has all-but-given-up on modern dating until she runs into the man of her dreams… who happens to be hiding an incredibly dark secret.

The movie arrives on Disney+ on Friday, 18 March. Check out our interview with Sebastian Stan about the movie right here:

DEEP WATER

Director Adrian Lyne (Unfaithful, Indecent Proposal, Fatal Attraction) is hoping to revive the erotic thriller genre with this story of a husband (Ben Affleck) who finds himself the prime suspect when some of the men his wife (Ana De Armas) has extramarital affairs with are found murdered.

The movie will arrive on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, 18 March.

WINDFALL

A Hitchcockian thriller following a young couple who arrive at their vacation home only to find it being robbed. Stars Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons and Jason Segel.

The movie is available on Netflix from Friday, 18 March.

REMINISCENCE

Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton star in this mysterious sci-fi thriller from Lisa Joy (one of the creators of the recent Westworld reboot). If you can picture Inception in a world ruined by climate change, then you’ve got the central hook of this one.

Available on NOW from Friday, 18 March.

NIGHTMARE ALLEY

As we said in our review when it arrived in Irish cinemas less than six weeks ago, this is exactly the kind of adult-aimed movie people claim Hollywood doesn’t make anymore. Guillermo Del Toro’s Oscar-nominated psychological thriller stars Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins and Toni Collette.

The movie arrives on Disney+ on Wednesday, 16 March.

BAD VEGAN: FAME. FRAUD. FUGITIVES

A four-part documentary series that uncovers how celebrity restaurateur Sarma Melngailis went from being the queen of vegan cuisine to the tabloid-touted “Vegan Fugitive” when she falls for a man who promises to make her dreams come true.

All episodes available on Netflix from Wednesday, 16 March.

CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN

Gabrielle Union (Bad Boys II) and Zach Braff (Scrubs) front this comedy about two parents with 12 kids. A remake of the Steve Martin 2003 comedy, which was itself a remake of a 1950 movie.

The movie arrives on Disney+ on Friday, 18 March.

Clips via Prime Video, A24, Universal Ireland, Walt Disney, Netflix, Searchlight & WB
